Today, I am going to be talking about a quick, yet POWERFUL advice that has helped me become more efficient and effective. This is how to be efficient in life by doing it right the first time.
If you don’t have the time to do it the first time, when are you going to find the time to redo it right the second time?”
It’s a very simple question and it makes a lot of sense. We always try to rush things because we have a deadline, or we just want to get it DONE, or for whatever reason. But if you are not doing it correctly the first time, when are you going to come back to it and give it the proper attention it deserves?
Most likely, never!
How To Be Efficient? – Find Time the First Time
This is a HUGE lesson for me and that’s why I share it for all of you. What I found is that I’ve been a victim of this. I‘ve been thinking:
“I want to get this out. I wanted to get this out last Tuesday. It’s this Thursday. Let’s get it done. Boom! That looks fine. Put it out there.”
Then, I want to fix it. I want to make it better because, ultimately, I am a perfectionist. I want to put out only my HIGHEST quality, my greatest good and greatest service to the world. I don’t want any mistakes in my work.
I don’t want my work to look anything less than high quality, EXCEPTIONAL. Like an expression of me in the care and attention I have inside, I want to be expressed on the outside.
If I put out something that is less than up to my own personal standard, then, there is an internal resistance for going out to it.
Because not only am I annoyed with myself for putting up something that is lackluster or below my standards of exceptional quality, but I now have a time-sink aversion to it.
“Ugh, this thing is crummy. Ugh, I have to go pay more attention to it.”
It’s a double NEGATIVE. Not only are you not getting the result that you want, you then have a resistance to going back and CHANGING your results.
The way I feel is that I always want to CREATE. I always want to put out more in the world. I always want to produce more results. I very rarely feel excited to return to an old result and revamp it.
So, if you don’t have time to do it the first time, when are you going to have time to redo it? The answer is NEVER!
You can become much more efficient in life by extending your deadline or not setting a deadline at all. Understanding your PASSIONATE work on something is going to produce the greatest results. Then, working inside of it until you feel like you have produced the GREATEST results and only then moving on to the next thing.
This is a similar concept to what I taught you in my video entitled “How to Become an Expert”, make sure to check that out as well!
Now, this applies to ANY area of life. You don’t want to get in a “good-enough” shape where you won’t feel bad about yourself in a week and then a week later, after you have already broken all the habits that you used to get into the current-level shape, you now have to revisit and reinstall those routines and get back into action.
Why did you not do it the first time – so much LESS energy drain and willpower required?
We only have a certain amount of willpower. The amount of time that you test your willpower is the likeliness that you are going to succeed or not. It’s also how efficient you are being.
So, if you are forcing yourself to act out of your willpower TWICE (once to start a thing and once to revisit it), that’s TWICE the energy and half the efficiency. You’re going to have half the results in your life because our willpower is malleable. You’re not always going to find it that second time around.
Quick little advice: do things right the first time and you are going to see MASSIVE increase in efficiency in your life and you are going to enjoy the results you are producing in all areas much more thoroughly.
This is my main advice for today! I hope that has been helpful for you.
